Performing a powerful mix of traditional, contemporary, and home grown repertoire, Naya and its conductor Adam Brockway bring energy, passion and attitude to their music.

The chorale is a joint project between conductor Adam Brockway, and business manager Jeremy de Vries-Turnell. Having sung in many groups together and never quite finding the right fit, in mid 2011 they decided to start Naya Chorale.

The response for Naya’s inaugural year was overwhelming, with over 60 musicians auditioning. The 2012 line up is truly outstanding, drawn from all over Perth, these talented singers all have previous choral experience and many are established performers in their own right.

AN EVENING OF SILLY SONGS

An Evening of Silly Songs is the long awaited, inaugural and not-to-be-missed concert of Avocado Pair – otherwise Chris Durrant & Stephen Turley – performing satirical and amusing songs of Tom Lehrer, Flanders & Swann, Mozart (well he wrote the music anyway), Offenbach and others.

The songs encompass animals, science and the obliteration of life on Earth.  They span the late 1950s to the 1970s and include classics like the Hippopotamus, Gnu and Elements songs and many more ranging from biting satire to the amused observation of human foibles.

The Denmark Festival of Voice is the only indoor winter music festival in rural Australia, and one of only a couple of winter festivals of any type in the nation. The 8th iteration of the festival kicks off this year on June 1 and runs over the newly renamed WA Day weekend.

The festival program is now available on the web at www.dfov.org.au listing all 40 acts in concerts and workshops. While a full immersion in the festival with a weekend ticket is recommended, day tickets can be purchased on-line, the Denmark Visitor Centre or at Spot Newsagency.

The unique style of this winter festival has allowed it to have a stature in the national music festival scene that belies its size and budget, in the same way that the Mildura Writers’ Festival ‘punches above its literary weight in provincial mid-winter Victoria. The  festival involves 23 concerts and numerous workshops in 5 cozy venues in the middle of Denmark, the tourist destination where ‘the forest meets the sea’. The result is an intimate  winter event that creates an artistic community that anyone can access in a village location of sublime natural beauty. Those who love a cappella singing in particular appreciate the intimacy of the venues and the quality of the headline acts, such that the festival has become the premier weekend-away for Perth choirs. Coming from Melbourne this year, the festival features the three women of Aluka, and Stephen Taberner appearing solo and with the Spooky Men of The West. Wood log fires, local cappuccino culture, wineries and a vibrant art scene add greatly to the attraction.
