The Spirit of the Streets Choir (Inc) commenced in Perth, Western Australia in 2007, formerly as the Big Issue Choir and renamed to its present title in 2008. It caters for the disadvantaged people in our Society including the homeless, people with physical and mental disabilities, people in drug and alcohol rehabilitation and people that are just plain lonely or wish to sing with a Choir. It provides an activity to allow the Members to re-establish themselves, make connections and gain much needed confidence to go forward.
Spirit of the Streets is a non-auditioned informal Choir directed by Bernard Carney.
Rehearsals are held each Tuesday 2pm – 3.30pm at St John’s Lutheran Church, Aberdeen St, Perth.
There are no subscriptions levied against the Members.
The Choir presented a concert to an audience of 2,000 people at the Perth Concert Hall in 2008, followed in 2009 by a concert in St Georges Cathedral to 400 people. In 2010- a small concert to 150 people in St Patrick’s Lutheran Church, Perth. In addition the Choir carries out around 30/40 smaller gigs each year, mostly by invitation.
The Choir is run by a small but dedicated band of volunteers who give their time and expertise freely and they support the Music Director, Bernard Carney in his work with the Choir.
