Marilyn has worked in many widely varied fields of music since the 1970s, making her reasonably mature and very experienced. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where she was awarded the Ralph Vaughan Williams Scholarship for advanced studies in piano accompaniment. As an accompanist she performed in the major London concert halls, Europe, and the USA, with frequent BBC broadcasts.
At the same time she continued and developed her interest in musical theatre, resulting in her appointment as vocal coach at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and became a musical director for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Royal National Theatre.
Following her move to Australia, Marilyn was appointed Head of Music with West Australian Opera, working on over twenty five productions with the Company. She is an elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, was a nominee for a WA Citizen of the Year Award, and in 2000 was awarded the Prime Minister’s Centenary Medal for services to Australian opera.
Under Marilyn’s direction since 2006, the WASO Chorus has achieved growing national and international acclaim. She continues to broadcast on ABC Classic FM, and has supervised master classes in Perth and Sydney, where she was an Invited Artist in Residence at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Marilyn’s experience with many aspects of the voice, have given her unparalleled insights into the joys, and disappointments, of singing. She has worked tirelessly to bring an understanding and love of music to the wider Australian audience, with lively corporate performances and presentations, contributions to Art Song Perth, the hugely popular ‘Big Sing’ in Perth Concert Hall, and pre-concert talks for WASO.
